This union of masculine and feminine is very clearly depicted on the outer walls of some temples, for example, at Khajuraho, where centuries ago suggestive erotic scenes were sculpted. There, it is men and women who physically unite, whereas the symbol of the lingam represents a process of the spiritual life. It is within ourselves that these two principles must be united; until then, we are incomplete. If initiates are complete beings, it is because they have realized within themselves that union of masculine and feminine, and so they have no need to look outside themselves for their complementary principle. That is why they are liberated beings, free and creative.
